4.9l engine noise
I have a 86 club wagon with a 300 6. This van just keeps on going and going and going. Recently though it has developed a noise. Sounds like a lifter noise, but, I am not completely convinced it is. It comes and goes, almost in rythem. More like a clicking noise. With the dog house off it sounds like it is coming from outside the engine. When it shuts off there is a sound like a selenoid closing? It lasts just a few seconds. When it is not making this noise the engine sounds like a well oiled singer sewing machine. I have used good oil and changed regularly. Its coming up to the 100,000 mile mark. I am just wondering if there is anything emission related that could make a clicking noise such as this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

hmmmmmmm many different things you say. Keep investigating. Good response. Just kidding. I drained a quart of oil out and put some MMO in. Seems many posts discussing this very same issue. It's getting quieter, so lifters may have been the problem afterall. I am going to run the marvel in for a few and then change and add a qt of shaler rislone (another one mentioned frequently in the posts). I expect the next 100,000 miles to be just as good as the last 100,000.
