Yeah, I know... why? Because Hayride is an old school truck. We’ve got our new tech vehicles, a Tacoma and 3 series BMW convert in the garage.
I put out the word at a electronics repair shop in town I was looking for an old Ford 8-track stereo. A week later they called and gave me this one below. Wondering if anyone can tell me if they came in F150 Lariats. The shop told me it was from a 78 Lincoln Towncar and the inked numbers lead me that way.
Thanks
Even if they weren't available from factory I'd go with it. 8-tracks are so cool in old vehicles. Often when demonstrated to the younger generation they have no idea they existed. Most likely you'll have to send it to someone who can refurb the 8 track player.
Cassettes were just coming onto the auto scene in the late 70s via aftermarket. My 77 had a period correct cassette player in it when I got it so am leaving it as I still have a case full of cassette tapes.
I installed that exact kind of 8-track unit in my truck, works great!
8-track stereos, or course, weren't offered in these trucks, and installation requires a little modification of the outer dash bezel, but it will fit.
Let me know if you guys need any tapes now. Even after selling off a few, I've probably still got close to 400 or so left. A few different genres, but mostly sixties and seventies rock. Quite the eclectic mix I would imagine. Probably still have the first ones I ever got (from a friend) plus the first one I bought new from a store (Dark Side of the Moon of course).
Most of them are visually pristine because I was one of those annoying guys that wouldn't let their friends toss them around. Some have even had new transition strips put on (I have the jig and tape) but most are likely about to come unglued.
If you can find, or make the correct size metallic tape you can fix your own to work for the next twenty five years or so, until the glue on those lets go and you can do it all over again!
The sound quality of the 8-tracks was actually better than the cassettes those first couple of years. Higher speed played a part, but technnology's progress took over.
Not that I would let something like progress stop me from enjoying my music! I even bought a 2004 Buick because that was the last year of that model that you could get both cassette and CD radio in. One of these days I might just step into the new century!

1973/79 F100/350 & 1978/79 Bronco were not available with an 8 Track or Cassette radio until 1980.
