1996 7.3 clutch problems

I have a 1996 ford f-250 with a 7.3 in it about 3 months ago I did a zf5 swap on the truck and when I did I put a used clutch into it because I didn't want to spend the money at the time. A couple of weeks ago the truck stopped at a stop sign and won't take off from it none of the gears would engage so I pulled it home and spent the next couple of weeks putting a new clutch in which was flywheel clutch pressure plate throw out bearing and pilot bearing. After I got all of that done today I drove it around for a few miles and it worked fine until I came to a stoplight and it wouldn't engage anymore eventually I had it in 1st gear at 3400 rpm and it caught and shot the truck forward. Also I noticed today that after I put all the new parts in that my clutch pedal was softer then before when I did the swap though I bought a brand new pre-bled system and have probably only put 5000 miles on it. Any help for this problem would be greatly appreciated Mark.

I would lay under the truck. (With the wheels chocked) and have someone depress the pedal and check the travel of the slave cylinder. Next time, shut the truck off, put it in gear, press the clutch and try to restart the truck. It will probably be better than what you experienced.

Thumbs up

Check the pedal box bushings and the little swing arm bracket too. When box bushings wear, you receive less total slave throw. Swing arm wear does the same deal.

Shifter has two plastic bushings in the tower. Check those.

As '97-psd' stated, check travel. I think it is somewhere around 0.5", I would have to look but you can instead - 1996 Bronco/F-Series Workshop Manual
