I have a really bad lifter tick in my '93 F-150 302, and i know its only a matter of time until everything else goes, i haven't driven it since i noticed the tick. My buddies suggested i put a new cam and whole set of new lifters, along with this i want to tear out the EFI that came on it because its garbage and put a 4 barrel carb on it. If anyone could steer me in the right direction to a good cam or intake it would be much appreciated.
You should have a roller cam in there now. So I doubt the "tick" is from a lifter unless the internals are really sludged up. If that's so, then I'd suspect the noise is the #4 or 8 rod bearings making the noise from being starved for oil (they're at the end of the line in the oiling system so get starved first) To convert to a carb, you'll need to swap out the ignition system as well, the EFI distributor will not work properly with a carb. It's advance is controlled by the ECM.
If you are dead serious on a carb go performer dual plan, worth the cash even for a stocker. Howards makes a good low end replacement with lifters for 120 bucks on ebay, Good cam for the price and should play nice with a good carb. I recommend a Edelbrock if you are going for it for real. But being serious, Check oil pressure first and run a can of sea-foam in the mean time and change the oil. Sometimes a little grim is all it takes to make a engine do wild stuff. I have a crown vic I learned that mess on, so dirty it wore the ends of the push-rods down so far it was barely opening the valves and choking the thing. Engine runs allot better now that one isn't bent and the rockers aren't falling off as well but if you don't work towards cleaning that mess out if it is dirty or figuring out the cause of the tick one way or another you should bite the bullet and pull it and get it hot tanked at min with fresh hone rings and bearings if needed and then add the cam and carb you want.
A roller motor will wear the pushrods regardless of what the oil has done. They do not rotate in service like a flat tappet motor does. The rocker ends wear to a somewhat knife edge and should be changed if it's got more'n 100K miles on it. Don't waste your money on a Performer, go for the RPM instead. It'll work the same as the Performer in the lower rpms but give you room to breathe on top, Other good intakes are the Stealth, Ford's A321, Shelby's old Cobra, Ford's older C9OX and Edelbrock's old F4B
