I have a 1975 f250 with a 360. Last weekend I installed a edelbrock performer manfold, 750 cfm carb and an isky rv cam. I put everything back together and it hasn't started all week after numerous tries. I'm getting spark, I set the distributor everywhere under the sun, And the most I have ever gotten is a HUGE backfire and some coughing. Does anyone have any ideas?
What are the cam specs.
The same thing happened to me with my 390 and the Edel RPM cam. I got adjustable rockers and it fired first try.
Sometimes you need to change the pushrod lenth or get adj. rockers to get things right.
randyb12 is right, if your lifter pre load is off, your engine won't start. did you check to make sure your dizzy isn't 180 off? check the ovious before spending money !!! just a little advice !!
Well, I took the engine apart to put an edelbrock performer carb in. When I got in there I found that I had an isky supercam. It workerd before. I put the Isky back, and I used the lifters supplied with the edelbrock. Do you think this could be the problem? I still have the old lifters, and they are in good shape. Should I lube 'em up and put them back?
Get the timing figured out first. You're running a pretty mild cam if I remember right. There should be no reason to go changing the valve train yet.
Sounds like you need to be on a different gear for the dizzy position, or your wires aren't on right.
I've fought this battle of couple of times. Mine fired pretty quick tonight..I was even surprised. I had the right spot on the cam/dizzy gear on the first try.
Are you starting it from the engine bay, and adjusting the timing while trying? I found this a must to get the sweet spot.
I put the cam back in the way it came out. I marked all the plug wires and double checked and they are all right. I haven't been adjusting the timing while trying to start the motor though. I'll give that a try tomorrow, after I charge my battery . By the way,I meant edelbrock performer cam in the last post, instead of carb.
It's real hard to tell at installation. I just try to point the rotor at the number 1 cylinder wire. If you get a lot of kick-back, the you probably need to back off. If it doesn't want to run, maybe a little advance. If you don't have a handheld starter switch, you can get one for a few bucks or build one with some wire and a pushbutton momentary switch (or any switch for that matter).
You'll get a lot better feel for what's happening when your turning the dizzy while it's trying to start (make sure everything is well insulated..avoid the zap). Also, I use the starter fluid spray to get things going. pump the throttle to make sure it's spraying, but only like 2 quick squirts (don;t flood it). If you move the dizzy as far as possible in one direction, and it improves, but not enough then you have to move to the next tooth on the gear. etc. etc...
you probably knew all that, but it just came out since I was just doing the same thing tonight.
