How do I know

I have lifters 'ticking' and would like to replace them when i put my new intake and carb on. I have a 1970 302 in a same year F100.

How do i know what kind of lifers it has Hydraulic or Mechanical
How do i know what kind of cam it has Roller or Flat
I would also like to replace the push rods but need to know roller or flat

any advice on how to pep her up a bit would be nice too.
planning on intake/carb 600cfm 4bbl.

thanks
Jim

In a 1970, as OEM:

Hydraulic lifters
Flat tappet

Why do you need new pushrods?

If it's ticking and has a lot of wear, you are fooling yourself to beef it up as you will soon have a ring or bearing issue.

Rebuild time, along with ARP hardware in the low end.

GT40 heads--many posts about those--a good manifold, 600 or even 500 cfm carb, headers if you like. RV cam, 9.5 or so compression.

Thank you for your response and input.
I was going to replace the push rods when i did the lifters as i figured why not they are cheap at the same time when i replaced the intake and carb. Headers are already on it, was going to wrap them when i change the intake.

are you telling me the ticking lifters are a sign of main bearing or ring issues? she used no oil nor does she smoke. she seems to run fairly strong but does tick a bit.

If a rebuild is what i coming soon guess I need to find a new block and heads to build on so i can slip it in when this one goes.
know anyone with a 302 short block they want to sell? Used is good.

Ticking lifters are not a sign of bearing or ring issues by themselves. Could be the wrong or dirty oil and will clear up with high detergent additives or oil. What I am suggesting is that the engine is probably old and worn, and the lifters are just the audible evidence of wear. If you have no other issues with it, you may get by adding performance to it without a rebuild. But don't be surprised if you have issues--happens all the time with a tired engine now being run harder at higher revs.

Make SURE its not an exhaust leak, being that you have headers on this block. Many people have been fooled by a hole in a primary or a loose mounting flange.Check for exhaust gas in the dark with a flashlight. You should be able to see it.Exhaust leaks sound very much like a lifter problem.

She is old and more than likely tired. I bet she does need a rebuild to keep faithful as anything 40 years old would need. I would like to get someone else tired old 302 or 351 to hang on a stand in the shop and rebuild it while the installed one hangs in there.

I will try and look for an exhaust leak as that is possible. I will do it when I replace the valve cover gaskets as she leaks a bit from them. This will also give me a good reason to clean the engine off.

Thanks again for all the info it has been extremely useful.
i am always open to advice.
