my spedometer has begun to make a whistling sound a Sound like a losse v-belt it starts at 20 mph, and then it gets worse, i have had it separated and lubricated where the shaft that rotates with the cable, the cable is new. are there other places inside the speedometer you can lubricate or anything else I can do.
Check your speedometer head. I’m pretty sure there’s a place to lube after where the cable attaches. Problem is you’ll have to remove the guage cluster to get at it.
I concur with the above posts. My '55 came to me with an air raid siren that sounded anywhere north of 10 mph! Put in a few drops of light oil (3-in1) as previously mentioned and you should be good to go. My situation was a little more extensive, but my 2 cents is to start simply & give the oil a chance to get worked in.
Yes 12 I have tryed to lubrice as you showed but I don't think it helps but now I tryed agine and then blow with a air gun in the hole and now it is simply better than a new one. Thanks for the fine picture it tells it all
If a few drops don't solve it, take the screws off the back and take the Speedo head out. Then you can oil the gears directly. I sprayed WD-40 directly into the gears to clean them and lube them.
Not to hijack this thread, but as long as we are on a 54 speedometer, My cable went bad last season. So I put a new one in it, I then had trouble with the needle actually moving as it should.. I could turn it by hand or with a drill, but it does not correlate to actual speed. If I am doing 40 it may or may not read 20. However, the odometer still works good. I removed and replaced several times during the process. It is almost like the magnetic field on the D'arsonval movement has been altered. Any thoughts?. I now take my GPS with me to monitor my speed.
