The speedo in my '88 Club Wagon has an annoying cyclic noise which sounds like it could be a poorly lubricated speedometer cable. However, I've had the cable greased (twice), and the sound persists. The sound is a combination of tic-tic and scratch-scratch. I can see a little irregular movement in the speedo needle.
Is there a lubrication or other simple solution to this problem? Is the instrument cluster easily accessible?
Wonder if the plastic driven gear in the trans. is bad? (chipped)
There's just a few screws holding the instrument cluster on. After you take them out you can get it out far enough to disconnect the speedo cable from the rear of the panel.
