i have been hearing about this new special oil for 4x4's, is that stuff any good or is just a gimmic? also i heard that it is not good to change from a regular oil and a synthetic, is there any truth to that? thanks
Probably a gimick. Use a good brand of oil meeting API and SAE spec for your engine.
Most mechanics prefer to stick with one brand of oil. There is a slight chance of a mismatch between additive pacakges between brands so just to be safe we stick with one brand.
Technically you are supposed to be able to change back and forth with no harm.
Hi, that 4x4 oil is just a regular synthetic, the only difference is it says it's for 4x4's!!
Actually, switching back and forth from synthetic oil to conventional can cause problems. Synthetic oil swells gaskets/seals. When you put a conventional oil back in those seals will shrink up smaller than original. This will cause many small oil leaks. So once you choose to use synthetic, you will have to use it for the life of the engine. Hope this helps!!
The issue about synthetics causing problems with seals is old technology. Modern synthetics, with the last say 10 years or so, do not have this problem. Still, I would not switch back and forth between syn and dino becuase you won't gain the maximum benefit.
