engine cleaner

I have heard that if you put a quart of ATF in with your oil for a short time prior to an oil change it will clean out the insides and quiet the motor a little. Is this true and will it hurt anything doing this? Is there a better product out there that will acomplish the same thing?
I have a 92 i6 that has what sounds like lift noise or a ticking sound.

Any recommendations will be appreciated.

I would reccomend going to walmart and get a can of motor flush. It comes in a silver can.It cost about two bucks. You put it in your engine, run it for five minutes, and then drain your oil.I us a can about every three oil changes. You would not believe what comes out of that drain plug.Works great for me and for two dollars you can't go wrong.I do not know about the atf but i would use something that it is designed to do.

I'd start with something mild like marvel mystery oil in the crankcase before I went for the major solvents. Sometime that dirt needs to just stay where it is. Cut your filter open and see what kinda junk you are catching out of there.

I agree with Ecuri if you have a severerly dirty engine.I would start with something just like he said Marvels mystery oil.But i use motor flush because i like to keep it clean. If you have a neglected motor some debris might come loose and you may be faced with another problem. But thats for a motor that gets its oil changed every 6,000 miles or has really been neglected. But i would start off with the mystery oil and if you do not get desired results then try the motor flush.I gurantee that stuff works.I would also cut the filter open it is a good idea to see what is going through it.What type of filter are you using?

Try some Auto-Rx. (Google it and read up.) It's a natural ester that cleans over time (1,000 +/- miles) and will not degrade the efficacy of the oil.
