2007 Expedition stumble.

Working on a 07 Expedition 5.4 2wd with roughly 261k miles on it now. It's got a shudder that gets worse the longer you drive it, it's most noticeable between 40-55 in OD, however even if you cut OD off you can still feel it slightly. It had a CEL for low coolant temp (running about 165 down the road) so a new thermostat was installed and it now cycles between 188-195 on the road. That was the only code stored or pending. So watching live data it tends to stay more in the lean side but not terrible. Short term seemed to fluctuate between 0-5/6 rarely going negative. The long term was running in the 6.3-8 while the shimmy happened however at idle it came back to around 1.5. So today we put a fuel pressure gauge on it. Turning the key once with out cranking it went to about 28, after cycling the key about 4 times it got up to 45psi. No idling it was right around 60 on cold startup (the figures I was told by a friend who is a mechanic and looked it up was key on engine off was 62+, key on engine running 65-71). So we run the gauge up and head down the road with gauge zip tied to the wiper. No shimmy and fuel pressure around 58-60. After about 15 miles fuel pressure is down to 53 and it starts to shimmy, keep going and by 25 or so miles it is down to 48 psi and shimmy is very noticeable. It never went below 47-48 on the 30 or so miles I drove it. Once back in the driveway idling the pressure slowly crept back up to about 60.

They've had this expedition since about 130k miles and as far as I know it has never had a fuel pump replaced. I know it hasn't in the last 5 years and 130k miles anyways. Is there any other known issues I should check prior to putting a new fuel pump in this thing? Also how big of a PITA is it to change with out a lift?

Can you look at mode 6 data for any misfires?

The pressure is controlled by the FPDM and will vary. Your stumble is text book case of a misfire. When were the boots and plugs changed?

Forgot to add that, brand new plugs and coils. They were changed because of this issue and no code setting, even with new ones the issue continues.

I have not seen that, I had a friend ask me that too. My scanner is just a cheaper unit that does live data but apparently doesn't do it all.

I would still confirm there are no misfires before replacing the pump. They way you described the symptoms sounds like a misfire.

It's not throwing any codes pending or stored, the issue was there before the new plugs/COP, and still there after the new parts. A misfire wouldn't cause the fuel pressure to fall off.

I am having a very similar issue.

I also have an '07 with 160k miles. I had a lot of shuddering usually around 18k RPM, and when I checked for misfires with the Forscan app would get 20-50 misfires in a 30 mile trip. I changed all of my plugs and COPs and and now I get maybe 1 or 2 in the same 30 mile trip. Needless to say, the shuddering stopped for a while, but now it is back. It is starting to shudder again, but it feels a little different than the misfire shudder, it could be the fuel pump.

I have replaced the fuel pump twice in about 3 years. The first time I noticed a shudder like you are describing, but the pump never failed. I replaced it with an aftermarket (Airtex) pump and it failed in 18 months leaving me stranded. Hoping that Ford had made improvements to the design, I replaced it with a Motorcraft pump. Unfortunately, I have a sinking feeling that it is about to fail again.

I have read that many people have fuel pump issues with the 2007+ Expeditions, and that if you let your fuel drop below 1/4 tank, it could cause the pump to overheat, but I have read a few '07 owners never have the issue. I think in my case it could be because I pull trailers every now and then, and that extra fuel demand may make the pump burn out faster. I never had the issue with my '99.

To answer your question, I completed the process in my driveway. You can do it if you have two jacks (one for the tank) and it wasn't that bad of a job. I even posted here about it - Here is the link.

Let us know how it turns out.
