Ignition gremlins
Hi Guys! This is only my 3rd post (at least I believe so). Anyway, I have a 2000 Exp 2WD, 5.4L, with 126,000 miles. And in the last couple of months it has become a hard starter, but nothing that triggers an idiot light or will throw a code. For example, it use to bust right off, now it may take a second or 2. It had new plugs at 100,000 per the manual, I have put 2 alternators and replaced the battery myself. It was my wife's car but it started acting up and she wouldn't have any of it. Especially, since the dealer or local mechanic couldn't find anything. It has no wires, but the coil-over-plug system. Does anyone know of a good way to test those. Although, once started it runs fine and smooth!I know that this really doesn't sound like a big deal, but it is not operating as it did, no matter what the computer saids. Anyway, any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Does it hard start just after it sits for a while or every time? Have you checked the fuel pressure to see what happens when you shut the key off? Maybe the check valves aren't working correctly anymore and the fuel pressure is bleeding down. I think there is one in the fuel pump & one in the fuel pressure regulator. Atleast that's the way my thunderbirds were...haven't had this problem on my expy. The schrader valve for checking fuel pressure is on the passanger side towards the back. You'll probably have to take the black "Triton 5.4" cover off to find it.
I suppose if you don't have access to a fuel pressure gauge, you could cheat by turning the key on, wait a few seconds for the fuel pump to run, turn the key off, then back on(wait for fuel pump)/off one more time before trying to start it. If the leak isn't real bad this should build up enough pressure to get it to start quicker than the 2 seconds.
Good luck!
