ground strap could do it but you engine wont crank over if there isn't one connected
Have you cleaned your grounds to engine?

Did you jump the exciter and get any output?

Any parts house should be able to spin that alternator up and see if it is putting out the required voltage, NAPA included. If it is,the alternator is not the problem.

im still a bit confused on where to run it, am i going from the positve terminal on battery to the small plug on the alternator, or to the pigtail that plugs into that same plug?

Either one. We need to make sure 12v goes to it and then check output of ALT
