1991 F-250 Diesel
Batteries, Atl. 1 yr old- NEW voltage reg.
I can not get a good charge. Sometimes the meter reads a slight pos. charge but most of the time its pulling a neg.???? Batteries have been tested. EVERY DAY STARTS WITH DEAD BATT.
What do you mean pulling a negative charge? A voltmeter should read 14.5 volts at the battery when idling. Is it higher or lower than that?
If the batteries drain overnight, you have a short somewhere - nothing to do with the charging problem. To find it, you're going to have to put an ammeter in series with the battery and start pulling fuses to isolate the circuit. Then start tracing wires.
check your glowplug relay, could be holding glowplugs on, will cause a major draw. up here in great white north when boosting ford diesels we cycle plugs a couple of times first then leave key on till relay de-energizes give batts a little more oomph for starting.
I've had several Ford alternators that charged just fine but when you shut the truck or car off and leave it overnight the battery would be dead in the morning. It may charge fine when running but will suck the life out of a battery overnight. The easiest way to check it is to first drive it and have it charged up good. Then unhook the hot wire from the alternator, either at the alternator end or at the starter relay end. If it's from the alternator end be very careful it doesn't touch anything as it's live. See if it starts in the morning. If it does then you'll know that it's the alternator that's draining the battery(s) Or, you can take the alternator to a auto shop, Napa, Autozone, etc. and have it checked for a bad diode.
