I picked up a tip reading an old thread about the thermostat.
Apparently the computer in the 88 is expecting to respond too a 195deg thermostat.
i had recently put in a 180.
Anyhow I put in a new one yesterday and noticed top rad hose isn't rock hard, new rad cap too.
Truck fired up and ran for 6 whole minutes before it started to drop rpm and die uff.
Added more coolant to top off and fired up again this time for about 10 min..
Again idle dropped to nothing and died off.
I was able to run codes once and 21 ECT sensor out of range is gone.
Im going to pick up some autolite spark plugs today and change those.
The new nkg plugs in the truck have been cooked with black soot so many times now it may be a smart thing.
Id like to check fuel pressure again and see where it's at.
I now have a spare computer as I picked one up at junk yard the other day.
well that took awhile !!
My code 21 is finally gone, I think the thermostat change to 195, rad cap, coolant flush helped out.
I put auto lite copper plugs in gapped tp .044
The truck never really seem to know whether it was hot or cold.
I suspect that running off the front tank has some problems as it seems to labour after a few minutes. That selector valve may need some attention. Switch to rear tank and smooths right out.
It it was pretty satisfiying to get to drive the truck again last night, I was waiting for it to crap out on me as its done the last hundred times, temp stayed good and engine ran well !
