I have a 1985 ranger 2.3l efi and it bogs and dies while while driving,it can sit and idle all day long but when you go to drive it, it works great for 3-4 minutes then out of nowhere starts bogging sometimes I can keep it going a little longer but in the end the truck always dies . I know I'm loosing fuel pressure , I hooked a gauge up to it and drive it down the road when the truck died it showed 10 psi , from here I'm lost . It has a new fuel pump in the tank and I can hear the other one running when I click the key on , Also two new fuel filters .
I'm not up to speed on this vintage model, so only able to offer up some general thoughts to get things started, until other members chime in.
If you know you have a low fuel pressure problem, the high pressure pump, its plumbing & voltage feed to the pump & the fuel pressure regulator, belong on your suspect list.
When it's running & fuel pressure is normal, how does the delivery rate over time measure up??? When its acting out & pressure is low, what does the high pressure fuel pump operating voltage at the fuel pump electrical connector measure????
If you have a fuel rail mounted fuel pressure regulator, disconnect its intake manifold vacuum line to see if its wet inside with fuel. If it is, the pressure regulators diaphragm is likely cracked & leaking fuel into the intake system, so replace the fpr. If the vacuum line is dry, try thumping the regulator & see if it'll wake up. If it does, replace it.
If this fuel system is a return type, that returns unused fuel from the fpr to the tank via the return line, make sure its not kinked, or plugged along its way to the tank.
Some thoughts for consideration, ley us know what you find.
Thanks for the insight ! I figured out the problem right after I made this post I have a fuel line pinched off and it would loose all fuel pressure while driving !
