I have an 87 F150 302 4spd manual that I got from my dad. I went out to start it one day and it would turn over but not start. After much diagnosis I finally narrowed down the the fuel pump in the tank. Now that the fuel is flowing again it starts however it immediately goes to 2000 rpm and runs for about 1 min before it shuts off. I checked for vacuum leaks but didn't find any. After reading many posts the TSP or fuel pressure regulator. Any ideas?
I don't think I checked to pressure again after I installed the new pump. I had borrowed a tester and had already returned it. Should I check it again?
This makes a good mechanic checking his work.It wouldnt hurt to recheck the fuel pressure. Also did you check for fuel in the vacume line that goes to the fuel pressure regulator? These all are easy checks.
as for vacuum leaks I just inspected the hoses for cracks/holes etc. Also, I'm gonna check for fuel in the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator. I'll have to reborrow the fuel pressure guage from my brother in law. I'm helping him install a rear axle in a ranger tomorrow afternoon so he'll owe me.....
There's no way that an engine can run at 2000 RPMs unless the throttle plates are open or there's a severe vacuum leak.
That is where you would be wrong sir. If the TPS is bad and it's sending an elevated signal to the computer it will open the IAC and it will run at about 2k rpm. I had a 351wEFI do this to me a few years ago. We didn't have any of the tools needed to test the parts so I took it to family friend who was a mechanic. Replaces the TPS and all was well once again.
