Hi, I started to do a rebuild (just tear down so far) on a 89 AOD. I found this between the front pump and the reverse drum area. Guy I bought it from said he had no overdrive, which makes sense. Was wondering what I should buy new here? For the parts with some abrasion, second picture, is it OK to polish the abraded surfaces, they dont seem too bad or do they need replacement too. Was also wondering what would cause this failure, was there another potential failure that caused this elsewhere I should be watching for?
Also I need to buy a rebuilt kit, any advice on a good one that wont break the bank? I have a very used 99 4r70w I can steal parts from but more I look into swapping parts, I'm thinking of not going that route. This is going into a 49 ford with a mild 302.
Back of front pump Other side, reverse drum area I believe, some abrasion on top surfaces.
Actually, after further reading, thinking I might swap in the my '99 4r70w 2" OD band into this '89 AOD. I was only missing the sun shell which I have now found for not too much. The list of items need are apparently:
"-Reverse sun shell from a 94-95 only automatic mustang. <<<< dont have but can get -Reverse drum from any 4R70W transmission from 1998+ -mechanical diode from 98+ 4R70W transmisson -intermediate pressure plate from 98+ 4R70W transmission. -You will most likely need a red pump endplay washer."
Should I upgrade the OD servo to the "A" kit, currently is a "B"? Like this approach, dont really want to mess with the wide gearing of the 4r70w.

I have done this conversion several times times with great success. The parts list above is correct, I will warn you that the AODE reverse sun shells are getting difficult to find and they are pretty expensive when you do find them. 98% of the time the Red pump endplay washer gives you perfect end play measurement, when you do this conversion. You don't really need the A servo when you upgrade to the 2" band, but if you are going to upgrade, both Sonnax and Superior make an A+ OD servo for the AOD, which work better than the Factory A servo. The Superior brand servo works well, The Sonnax brand is slightly less expensive and gives you a few more options for shift firmness, but it does require some fiddling, measuring and grinding and set it up before you install it.
I highly recommend installing the spiral snap ring to hold the one way mechanical diode clutch on the reverse drum. This will prevent the original failure from your pictures.
Thanks! I have the AODE reverse sun shell already, and found an "A" OD servo (not the A+), just need the time to fully dive in! I started.
Ok, just be aware factory A servo takes a different/unique return spring. Sonnax made replacement springs, but they dont list it on the web page anymore. the part number is 76831-sp, there appears to be a few retailers that still have them in stock and there are few floating around on Ebay.
