Help...? Engine issue
I know you’re a pop smoke comes out the tailpipe and out the hood. Car dies and I pull over to the side of the road. Open up the hood to find the water hose coming from the heater has given out and exploded everywhere. Car won’t start get it home drop the oil no water in the oil car starts up but sounds really rough. I think some water got in the carburettor because I have no hair protector on there because I have to pour starter fluid in it when it’s cold outside. Engine is running rough thinking about checking the compression of the cylinders has anybody experienced this it has a weird noise now. I would call it a knock but sound I little like it might be miss firing.
Here's my experience with a total coolant loss in my '84 351W:

Three years later, the engine is still going strong.
How long do you think your engine ran without coolant? In my case, the time was only a few minutes. It ran fine at idle, though, unlike your situation. Your plan for a compression test sounds like a good idea. I'd also suggest doing a cooling system pressure test.
Keep us posted.
