Bouncing Speedometer
So with this inherited truck, I get to fix the problems that my dad just dealt with. This one wasn't much of a problem for him because he lived in the city and didn't get much over 45 mph, ever. A bunch of years ago when he bought it, it had 35" tires on it. He was out playing in the mountains and shredded a rear tire. He was only a few miles from home so he just put the regular size spare on and limped home. After that, the speedometer will function smoothly up to about 40-45 mph then it starts to bounce. Over about 65 it's completely useless bouncing all over the place. He replaced the speed sensor in the rear end thinking he messed that up with the different size tires, no help there. Also the cruise doesn't work, I assume it gets it's signal from the speedometer. Am I looking at needing a different instrument cluster, or is this a sensor issue?

It's either a PSOM or wiring problem between it and the rear axle, the PSOM attaches to the back of the speedo module. The speed signal goes through the PSOM before going to the PCM and cruise control.

On one of my previous trucks the speedometer needle wouldn't stop bouncing unless the RABS behind the glove box was disconnected. It had a new Ford VSS and no other issue could be found. The thinking was the the voltage was too low when shared between the two.
