Eratic speedometer
This is my first time on here, I have a 94 F150, 351. My speedometer started acting up earlier this week. So far I have replaced the DSS sensor / RABS sensor I think they are the same, in the rear end, also, I've replaced the Speedometer head (PSOM), one had 173,000 miles, and the second one only had 81,000 miles and both are doing the same thing that mine was doing. The needle would bounce back and forth, fluctuating about 10 mile an hour difference. My truck has 159,000 miles. If anyone has any ideas on what is causing this, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, my cruise control, when on, causes the truck to surge as the speedometer does. My shifting seems to be fine.

The cruise control (and the fuel injection computer) tap the current speed out of the speedometer cluster, so if you're having problems with both, its more than likely the speedo itself, or the connectors to/from the cluster. You can replace the entire cluster assembly, or just the speedo if you don't mind taking out 15 screws. Neither is difficult!

Typically it's only the speedo when the engine is cutting out at 2-3 mph, this is a common problem. The thing to check is the ring on the back of the ring gear in the differenial. Pop the cover off and inspect. If any teeth are missing or damaged, it needs to be replaced. Check wire connections and follow the wires back as far as they go for cuts or bad connections.
