Speedometer??

Some time ago my speedometer on my '95 Bronco started "jumping" (say for example, between 55 and 65). When the cruise is set the truck surges with the fluctuation on the speedometer. When this started I took it to a mechanic who replaced the rear sensor, and then the speedometer cluster (used). Did not solve the problem. Months goes by, and I just tried a different mechanic. Tells me the rear sensor is bad, replaces it. Still not repaired, and the actual fluctuations on the speedometer are greater. Current mechanic tells me I need to find a used speedometer cluster. Seems like I've been here before. Any ideas? Thanks!

Well then for some reason the computer thinks that the truck is going faster than it really is. You've eliminated the sensor and the indicator, so the only thing left to check is what is between those: the computer and its wiring. Surging while in cruise could be caused by the sudden drop back to 55 being fed into the PID control loop and causing a large throttle input to correct the (incorrect) speed change.

You'll need to hear from someone else on what the correct test procedure would be, but if it is intermittent than perhaps the only way to know would be to at least temporarily swap it with a known good computer.

It is intermitent only in that it doesn't do it "constantly", just every 3-5 seconds! Would the computer be diagnosable at that level of activity, or would one still need to swap it out?

Probably not your problem, but....
I had a bad rear axle years ago, and on the interstate if i got over 65 or so my speedometer would jump real bad like you mentioned. My rear differential was completely out of oil (it was sprayed all under my car). Anyway, after the axle was replaced the problem stopped.

It's dry

Speedo inner cables need to be greased...after all, its a woven steel cable inside a metal housing. When dry, the inner cable will bind against the housing, causing the needle to fluctuate. Eventually the inner cable will snap.

Ford makes speedo cable grease, white grease works just as well.

Well, I greased the inner cable and am still having the same problem. I appreciate all the input. I guess I'm off to the dealership for some analysis.

AFAIK a speedo on a post 91 does not have a cable - it runs off the VSS sensor on the rear axle.

I am having the same problems as per my other thread started today and I also get the RABS light on too.

MP,
Just read your thread. My I'll have an interesting discussion with my mechanic who "greased my cable"!! I have already replaced my sensor. Interesting, just two days ago my ABS light came on for the first time while driving the vehicle (95 EB). Its currently not "on" when driving. This is a perplexing problem, thanks for your comments.
