Replace Sending Unit?

The gauge inside the trailer reports a level of zero when there are still 20 gallons of fuel in the tank that feeds the generator. Does this mean the sending unit in the tank is bad? What is it going to take to replace that? I assume that I'll have to drop the tank, but how likely is it that I'll find a replacement part? What's the chance I can order one before I drop the tank so I can finish the project in one day?

I would check the wiring to the sender, then you should be able to check the sender with a ohm meter.

Any idea what I'm looking for in terms of measurements?

Thanks for the link. I looked at one of the videos and I'm now questioning what I have. The pump for my generator is external to the tank. The pump for the fuel station is also external to the tank. That makes me think that what I saw in one of the videos (a car fuel pump assembly inside the tank) is not what I have. I guess I'm going to have to pull the tank and extract whatever the gauge is using to detect the fuel level before I know what I have.

I replaced the fuel level sensor on my fuel tank. The sensor was a universal type that I found on Ebay. Drop the tank first and confirm the float sensor will interchange with what you find on the internet or take it to a quality auto parts store and let them match you up. In a toy hauler the fuel tank and generator or fuel system are not the same system and the fuel pump is not in the tank. It is a simple old school system..

Thanks for the confirmation.

I finally pulled the fuel tank, but for another purpose. Since it was down I got the part number off of the sending unit. The original part number is 8341-70. The upgraded replacement part number for a "Rochester Gauges" sending unit is 9341-A7000. I found it at LiquidLevels.net. The float length is adjustable. I suspect that the unit in my tank may just need to be adjusted, but I bought a new one anyhow for $57 plus shipping.
