Another Newbie Type Question

Sorry, I should have said "questions."
I was hauling my 5th wheel and going up a few fairly steep grades at about 60 - 65 mph and a couple of things happened.
1. The transmission downshifted and as the rpms increased I could hear what sounded like a squeaking bearing. It wasn't exactly like that sound but similar to it and it went away when the transmission shifted again. This repeated every time the rpms went over 3000.
2. Near the top of a long grade I will hear what sounded like a fan turning on and gradually getting louder until it was a dull howling sound. As soon as I reached a leveling off place it would stop. Is this the turbo I'm hearing?

I would like to keep this truck going as long as possible because it does a great job towing my 29' Montana 5th Wheel.

One more thing. There were times when my brakes were applied heavy that it began to feel like my rotors were warped as the rig would shutter or pulse rapidly while coming to a stop. Could this be ABS related?

Thanks,
Jim

The second sound is almost certainly the fan, the viscous coupling comes in with heat & generally making a long steep grade is the only time I've ever heard mine, the first sound could be turbo or a boost leak?

Could The squeaking sound be the Serpentine belt Squealing.

1) Are you taking the OD off climbing grades at those speeds? Not sure what elevation you are at out there, but when I am climbing UTE or Wilkerson Pass here in Colorado I ALWAYS take OD off and keep my RPM’s up to control EGT’s. It does sound like your turbo whistle.

2) Definitely sounds like your cooling fan kicking on, that definitely makes a racket when it’s on.

I’ve had loose cac boot clamps make that kind of sound at high rpm going up hills.

Thanks guys.

I don't believe the belt is slipping. So if the turbo is making that noise is it normal or do I need to start looking at replacing something?

Yes and no on the OD. When I remember I turn it off but sometimes it just shifts off itself when I press down on the pedal.

Is the cooling fan for the transmission?

Well, technically yes. The fan pulls air through your radiator. Transmission cooler, Intercooler etc which helps regulate your temps.

#1 is questionable. Could be belt slippage, turbo, or something else.
#2 is probably just the fan clutch engaging, totally normal.
#3 brake rotors can temporarily warp when hot then go back to normal. Start by checking the jug nut torque, loosen them a hair and tighten to spec. I think the current spec is around 160Ft. Lbs., but check on that.

Jim, do you have a chip or is your truck stock?

When I had the stock turbo and a tune it would experience turbo surge/stall. We called it the turkey.
Does the chirp you are referring to sound like a turkey gobble?

1) It's hard to diagnose from here but I would build a boost leak detector and check for leaks. While you have the intake tube off for this, check the turbo for play.

2) Engine cooling fan clutch engaging. Normal.

3) Brake rotors beginning to warp. When towing, try to anticipate stops and start slowing early like a semi. Minimize the use of brakes. Actually a good practice when not towing as well.

If the fan clutch engaged right after the squeak it's your fan clutch, IMO I don't think its your turbo, still worth checking it out.

No chip. Stock configuration.

Thanks, I plan to check out the entire truck in the next few days. Performance wise, I didn't have any problems whatsoever but these noises were new to me and a bit troubling.
