I know my 4x4 function works because I tested it out before I bought this vehicle. The PO went out and set up the hubs for me to test it and then reset them, so I didn't see what he was doing.
While browsing the owner's manual, I see that there is a LOCKED and FREE position...yet when I look at mine, there is only an AUTO and (what I assume to be) a LOCKED position.
So now I am puzzled....which position in the manual corresponds to the positions that I actually have....and which position should they be in while I drive "normally"?
If memory serves me correctly, Auto is the same thing as free. Auto just means that you can (if you have Electronic Shift On the Fly, or ESOF), that you can flip that switch to 4 wheel and it'll swap to that engagement. Locked is also manual, you flip it to locked, it should be in 4 wheel right then.
For most normal driving, Auto is what would drive in.
The previous owner may have manually locked the hubs for you because the automatic function isn't working properly. Very common issue, especially in the 1st generation trucks.
