I have a f150 with auto lockers on the front hubs. When I ingage the 4 wheel drive and go to disingae it my right front wheel acts like it locks up and few turn of the wheel and when ingaged it has a tapping noise in it. Any help?
this may just not be the best advice but i would just guess that the hubs are bad, if its new check with ford to see if they will fix it for free other wise save yourself later headaches and swap to manual hubs. thats just my two cents
The auto hubs on those years of trucks do not unlock very well. I have to fight with mine any time I need to unlock them. The best thing you can do to solve this is to put in manual locking hubs.
The term 'total crap' comes to my mind on Fords auto hubs. Best move you can make is ditch them, and swap some manuals in (I have a set of Warn Premiums). Even the local Ford dealership guys said they loved them. It only takes one good stuck to **** you off enough to swap them. I was stuck in a little ditch, and you guessed it. MY buddy came and helped me. He drives that "C" brand of automobiles. Needless to say, after all the years of me razzing him for that crap brand, it was all thrown back into my face . Oh well, take it in stride.
Look thru these pics - it only takes about 45min even for beginners, so don't sweat it. If you have 3 screws on each hub lock, you'll also need these and the 4-lug socket to tighten them. Other than that, you only need a good set of hubs (I use MileMarkers ~$60pr LLT), wrenches to take off the cap screws, maybe a pair of snap-ring pliers, and some dental-type picks to remove the C-rings inside.
I also usually repack the wheel bearings when I have the hubs open, and any time you take the hub off the spindle, you're supposed to replace the inner wheel seal.
If the spindle bearings haven't been replaced, you might as well do them, too; they're cheap and you won't want to go back thru all this to get to them in a few months.
