Fl820s fail

I bought my 2008 F350 may of last year and changed the oil soon after I got it. Used a Motorcraft FL820s. Only use the truck to tow the camper and haul thing home from Lowes and stuff like that. Only put 2500 miles on the oil and filter. Just changed the oil today using Amsoil oil and filter.
Decided to cut open the old filter to see how it looked and I was very disappointed to see a pleat completely torn away from the potting glue.

These filters are mafe by Purolator, and I've been reading for Years on bobistheoilguy about the Purolator tearing issue, but was very dissapointed.
Glad I got an Amsoil filter on there now!

This would certainly affect oil filtration but what effect would it have on oil pressure through it---would it become dangerously restrictive?

no effect on oil pressure. If anything it would be less restrictive since the oil doesn't need to be pushed through the paper.

Okay thanks---I can breath a bit easier now because I buy the FL820S's by the dozen for less than $3.50 each--didn't want them to be complete junk and damage a new reman'd 5.4 motor.

well they are still junk in my opinion. The hole on the filter allows unfiltered oil through the filter and back in the engine. Any dirt the filter caught could be released back into the engine.
I wouldn't recommend the Motorcraft filters anymore, this is not an isolated occurrence, several folks on bobistheoilguy.com have posted similar pics.

They should be called Puronow because the oil wont be pure later.
Ford seems to love making a fool of themselves in anything lubrication related.

Just get a LF16002 from Fleetguard, and call it a day.
Stratapore media is wire backed, filters to 10 micron.
And the media won't tear.

Running an Amsoil filter, synthetic wire mesh backed media. Media wont tear on those either.

This type of failure has been a regular item on BITOG for a number of years now. What’s interesting is it’s always the first pleat next to the seam and typically occurs when the pleats have poor spacing. I’ve seen this type of failure in many brands, but they mostly occur in Purolators, including the Motorcraft branded filters. That’s not to say all fail or even a high percentage, but it’s not unusual by any means. I’ve cut open four FL500s and had one fail, so I no longer use them.

Going from memory, but seems like it was about 6 or 7 years ago, this issue started with Purolator made filters. People have contacted purolator, sent pictures, sent used filters in for inspection. Purolator just doesn't seem to care about fixing this issue.
I cut open a purolator made quick lube filter off my brothers car about 4-5 years ago with a similar issue.
It really is a shame, purolator filters were well regarded for many years and I used to like them and use them alot.
Until ford get their filters from another company, or purolator finally steps up and solves this problem, I won't be using any motorcraft or purolator filters.
I
I will stick with Amsoil filters or Wix.
