If you are just changing the pan gasket, it's going to be like 4-5 qts. However, your TC has a drain plug, I recommend you drain that as well, then you are talking about 12-14 qts. total. You can use the cheap stuff labeled "ATF" as your trans takes Mercon III. Don't waste your money on Mercon V is my advise.
Oh yeah, if you do drain the converter, when you are putting the fluid back in, don't dump all 12 qts in at once. You put in about 6-7, start it up and let it run for about 30 secs, then put the rest in. Otherwise you will overflow the pan and ATF will start coming out the air vent.
I recommend that you don't use a smooth rubber gasket. In my experience, they always leak. Either get a cork gasket and torque it to 100 INCH pounds(corks gasket can't take any more torque) or go to Ford and get their ribbed rubber gasket(it's also reusable).
Is super tech at walmart ok to mix with oem I don't see. I don't see Super Tech Mercon 3 ATF ? I see ATF- Dexron 3 but it's the same price as Mercon 5 about $12.00?
Is Maxlife Dextron 3 ok to use with just a filter change? It's only $6.50 a quart. I just want to fix the leaking gasket. The truck is not going to last much longer.
I’m a little confused....doesn’t the container say Dex/Merc on it? That would meet Dexron III / Mercon specs and be ok to use. Either that or use Mercon V.
I am a proponent of Felpro gaskets but my bro in law advised me to go cork. He offered to replace it if it leaked and he hates ATF. He has been right so far. Sandy
Will a Carquest rubber gasket from advance last a long time? Do I add Permatex trans.RTV to both sides of the gasket, tighten finger tight wait an hour then torque the bolts, to what Haynes manual says.
Or just skip the gasket and just use trans. RTV, and not torque the bolts but instead a 1/2 turn more of the bolts after waiting an hour.
The main reason trans pans leak is because someone over tightened the bolts and or possibly warped the bolt hole surface.
Cork is fine but it's extra work in cleaning up and replacing it latter. That's why most prefer a good rubber gasket on valve covers and trans pans.Look up the torque settings and just do it right with a rubber gasket and it wonk leak.Just make sure to flatten the surface first with a hammer if needed.
