I'm getting a wheel noise that is a low frequency "hum" which seems to be worse from 45 to 55. It almost sounds like an out of balance tire, but seems to not worsen at higher speeds. I cannot tell from which wheel, but pretty sure it's front. I had a bad bearing on a front and rear honda minivan. As it got worse it was very obvious. A new timken is $200 so don't want to "try" parts.
I have another "noise". It happens when I go into 4wd-high. It's a squealing sound coming from the hubs I believe. When I go back to 2wd, it continues, but eventually stops. I used to think that if I removed the vacuum line from the hub it would stop. It did once yesterday but several other times it did not. It's quiet up to about 5mph, and then squeals noticeably.
I did replace both side upper and lower ball joints about a year ago.
Wheel bearings most often make themselves know when you are making a slight turn, Try rolling the windows down and while driving 20-30 make a sweeping turn in both directions.... usually you can hear the wheel bearings.
the 4x4 noise could be the roller bearing in the back of the hub, a ujoint, the dust seal... basically anything in the front that rotates. You are going to need to jack up the front and dive in and investigate...... you can also check the wheel bearings g for play at the same time.
Local dealer said it's the driver front wheel bearing. As I had it out a year ago for the ball joints it should be "easy enough" to replace. Which brand? Motorcraft? Timken?
I put Timken bearing on my truck when I replaced the bearings almost two years ago. They've been fine since, but some others have used a parts store brand with a three year warranty. I would personally go with the Timkens.
I have a brand new in the box Timken bearing that I bought for my truck to fix a noise on one side that turned out to be a caliper problem instead. If you want to save a few bucks, I'd happy to get this one off my hands.
Go figure. Amazon dropped their price $30 overnight. andym, no offense, just figured it easier to go with a big company. If you would have been in a nearby town, I'd have taken you up on the offer!
Installed the bearing. "Hum" noise gone. Since I had just replaced the ball joints, all came apart easily. My biggest headache was all the dirt/grit in the area due to our gravel roads and wet winter. Timken 515020 came with 4 mounting bolts and the yellow o-ring. Used this procedure, https://www.superdutypsd.com/ball_joint_article.php, (up to the bearing.. unless you are going on to ball joints also!)
