Whining

Racerguy

I didn't want to hijack the other thread. You asked if the whining noise was there while accelerating / decelerating or turning. My truck whines from the front end when decelerating (coasting) and turning. I'm thinking its the CV joints. Am I in the ballpark? Thanks.

A bad wheel bearing is more common.
Is it louder one way than the other?

Yes, it seems to do it more when I'm turning right (noise sounds like it's coming from the drivers side). Where's the wheel bearing on a 4x4?

The wheel bearing is in the hub assembly. If the bearing is bad you have to replace the whole hub assembly.

Well, I'm getting ready to do ball joints. This sounds like a "might as well" since I'll have it all apart.

How hard is the hub assembly to remove from the knucle and shaft?

Let's see if I can do this from memory...
Disconnect abs sensor (if applicable). Remove caliper from spindle bracket and tie back. Remove the cotter pin off the locking cap over the hub nut, remove retaining (hub) nut from end of shaft. Tap end of shaft back into spin dle to get axle "loosened up." Remove cotter pins from ball joints and tie rod. Undo the tie rod nut and tap the joint to break it loose. Undo the top and bottom ball joint nuts. Tap with hammer at the top and bottom joint and pull from end of axle shaft.... you now have the whole set up you need to replace in your hand.

The diagram I saw showed the hub separating from the knucle after removing the three bolts from the back of the knuckle.

That's right Joe.
If you're replacing the ball joints then the way that Kerry said is the easiest. It's easier to remove the wheel bearing/hub assembly after the knuckle is removed.

Thanks Dave. I am planning on doing the ball joints at the same time. I read the procedure in the sticky section and I think I'm good to go. I was just wondering if I should expect difficulty seperating the hub from the knuckle - i.e. rusted on like the rotors tend to do.

Sometimes the hub is hard to get out of the knuckle but if you're replacing it anyway it doesn't matter if you damage it.
When you have the knuckle removed you can spin the hub and see if the bearing feels rough or is noisey.

Thanks. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm still collecting parts, so I should get at it in a week or so.
