Air Bag, disabling

Have bag out of vehicle. Best ways to disable and gut. It's a 94, F-150, 5.0. Bag not working anyway.

Why do you want to gut it? I've never had one apart. Just leave it unplugged.

Guess I'll just have to leave it unplugged; but, really don't like the idea of an explosive sitting that close to my face. It looks like it cannot be disassembled without danger of it exploding. I guess we can thank our friendly Nanny, EPA for causing an explosive to be placed there. Looks like any type electrical event in that area could possibly cause the thing to explode.

You could put a 92-93 steering wheel on it.

What does the environmental protection agency have to do with it?

Its been there for 25 years and hasn’t “exploded “ so why do you think it will spontaneously deploy now? What is wrong with the bag? What codes do you have?

Replacing the steering wheel with 92-93 sounds like a viable option -- hadn't thought of that. I'll look into finding one. The chime is signaling five chimes five times (I have stuffed cotton down the throat of the chime --Ha). It is probably only in my mind: but "probably" is not good enough for me,i.e., an explosive that close to my face. One is too many to be hurt by an air bag -- probably more people being hurt by air bags than admitted or reported. Just my thoughts/opinion.

300 MPH racecars don't have aitbags, but somehow the public needs them on roads where the speeds are limited mostly to 70mph. It's nice to have a big brother looking out for us...NO THANKS!

race cars have cages and special seat belts. Drivers wear helmets and fire resistance clothing. There is always Russian roulette if you feel your life is too boring.

The owners manual instructs the driver to wear the seat belt to prevent lurching forward in a collision and having the air bag deploy could injure the driver. The seat belt fastened is to keep the driver rearward out of the way of the air bag deploying among other reasons for wearing the seat belt. This is an "air bag warning." If the chime is information that something is wrong with the air bag and/or its deployment; then, why not disarm the thing??? Maybe, the manufacturer could furnish instructions for disarming it, especially if the vehicle is old and no longer supported with parts and/or service by the manufacturer. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest and yes Big Brother is involved whether EPA or some other of its kin. Iraa

LOL, I think you mean the NHTSA.

Probably (definitely) better off leaving it connected, and not crashing into things. Is the only reason you want to disable it because you think it might randomly trigger?

Maybe a body shop could remove it for you?

They would be breaking the law. Depending on the state an owner can't "tamper" with the airbag, but Federal law prohibits a motor vehicle repair business from making safety devices inoperative.

I disabled mine on my 96, not because I don't like airbags (I actually do) but because my custom winch mount interfered with the crumple zone which is used to slightly decrease deceleration forces and give time for the airbag to deploy before the driver's face arrives at the steering wheel.
You can just leave it unplugged and pull the airbag warning bulb. Note that this is against the law... be sure to put everything back before you sell the truck, if you ever do.

EDIT: Oh also... if you pull the bulb the ADM (Airbag Diagnostic Monitor) will beep at you so you'll have to unplug that, too.
