Are you on a hill or otherwise parked in a way that places a load on the drivetrain? If so, you may have to enlist some help to push the vehicle enough to relieve the pressure.

If you are on flat ground and no pressure on the drivetrain, you may have a switch or connection failure. I am not sure how the neutral safety switch is activated on your vehicle. Usually it's through the same "set up" that activates the brake lights. Check for connections at the brake lines just off the master cylinder. There should be a switch there with wiring. There will be additional wiring on the transmission near the selector arm, check the connections there as well.

Best I can do, mine is a '99 and they is different animals in many ways so I hope I haven't sent you over a cliff. Good luck.

OK then, shift interlock or connections as per prior posts. Any Check Engine Light showing?

Unnecessary remarks removed.

Turn the key to the point where the steering wheel unlocks, but the engine is not "on" (no lights lighting up in the dashboard). See if the gear lever moves.

If it then comes out of Park, as Mark asked above, do the brake lights work?
