Need an opinion
Hey I need ur guys opinion, I’m looking at purchasing a 2003 6.0 litre power stroke, the truck has 330k. The truck has had both head gaskets replaced but not studded, he also claims that the egr is blown and needs to be deleted. He wanted 6 originally but I talked him down to 3000$ is this worth it?

question is, do you need a diesel or just want a diesel since your buddies have one? Are you a previous diesel owner? You ready for the higher cost of maintenance and fuel?
330K is a lot of miles and, as many say, diesel should go half million, but this truck is being sold for a reason as it is probably in the high repair cost arena now. 6 months down the road you might need a 3k transmission overhaul or have to meet emission requirements or brakes/rotors/calipers and etc.....
So, you pay 3k for the truck, how big is your bank account to cover the essentials of owning a diesel and possible repairs....
Just my $0.02 on a truck this old and this many miles. I would shop more if I needed a diesel instead of just wanting a diesel.

If you have a 6.0 engine and tranny in excellent shape already and just need the chassis to piece together a good truck then continue reading. I say that because a quick check at ford parts online says a reman 6.0 engine assembly is over $13K...not sure I'd go for that. Lot of people are nervous about the 6.0. If that and price of a reman doesn't scare you then continue reading...
To me, $3000 is fair price for a rolling chassis. If the frame, body, and cab are excellent (maybe it only needs brakes, suspension, seat covers) then I'd buy it with the assumption it's going to need an engine and/or tranny. If you're okay with what that might cost then go for it. Some guys won't buy a vehicle with a high mileage drive train and I get that. Though there is something to be said for having an excellent chassis/body with a new engine/tranny which I'd get from Ford if possible or a shop with an excellent reputation. You might get lucky and the engine/tranny runs you a long time. If not, it may be nice to have a new engine/tranny with whatever warranty comes with them versus another truck with less miles that will cost you much more, have unknown service, and no warranty.
If you're not real comfortable assessing the chassis yourself or you don't have a trusted person to do it then I'd forget it. To me it's a judgment you have to make. The new 7.3 gasser and 10 speed look very interesting to me...if I was in the market for a pickup. Unless you can maintain and fix anything yourself, I tend to think a new truck will be just as cost effective over a given time frame as buying a used truck.
