truck **** the bed going down the highway, felt like it got a punch to the stomach or a swift kick to the groin, no power check wngine light on, sounded like it was running on 6 cylinders. My dads buddy scanned it with a good expensive snap on scanner, said #7 injector was dead, he said to get new valve cover harnesses before buying injectors. After some research has anyone tried the “quarter trick” to cure the loose connection of those harness? Was thinking of trying it to see if it fixes it but would i just be better off swapping the harnesses. Also, fresh interstate batteries were stone dead when i went to move the truck, could this issue be draining my batteries? Thanks
Ok thanks, going to check my grounds too, connections seemed tight as i just changed them out last week. Im planning on throwing new harnesses on both sides as well as glow plugs
Before changing a bunch of things out, perform the continuity test for the wiring. What kind of test did he perform? A buzz test?
The continuity test will verify Knottyrope’s comment. A bad under valve cover harness could fail, short, cause the IDM to shut down a back to protect itself, and fail a scanner test. The test would probably fault the injector when the wiring is the actual problem
With the valve covers off look for burnt - melted pins. Sometimes not real obvious unless you look inside the valve cover.
Picture of mine on the drivers side. Outer pins are glow plugs which draw the most power. They will get hot and melt over the years causing the injector bank to shut down.
Easy job, takes some time to get the valve covers off the first time though. any questions post away ...

Good idea as with the valve covers off it's pretty easy job. You may or may not need new pigtails that plug into the outside of the valve cover. Once unplugged just inspect them closely for any burnt or melted areas. There are many options out there for parts and as a first timer doing I would stick with OEM parts only. Riffraff Diesel has everything you need at competitive prices and well know on here for quality and customer service..

i dont think he ran a buzz test, i was on my way back getting tools to fix my new daily while he scanned it. I have a good hunch its the harnesses as it will run good at start up for sbout 5 sec, then start to get chopppy again, and smooth out again for 2 secs, and chop out yet again. I think you guys would agree 1 or more dead injectors wouldnt go in and out like that, sounds electrical to me
