Hello everyone this is my first time I want to hear but I wanted to ask you guys has opinion on what you think my problem may be. I have a 2003 F-250 4-wheel drive extended cab with a V10 and one of my questions is how do I tell without removing the valve covers if my truck is a 2 valve or a 3 valve? And also it has a lot of valve clatter when I start it up.and try to drive it but it's not very noticeable when it's just idling And it last for quite a while I have to let it run for almost 10 minutes before it goes away. Just wondering if you guys thought it maybe the valve seals are bad and it's letting the oil run back down and to the engine or if you think it would be the lifters? Thanks Jim for Bloomington Indiana
If I recall, the three valve engine started in the 2005
model year. Regarding the ticking sound: check common problem areas first, like the exhaust manifold. Broken exhaust manifold studs are a common failure (happened to my V10 as well) and gives off a ticking sound, which some misdiagnose as a timing chain issue or valve noise. Take a piece of tissue (or an automotive stethoscope) and place at the exhaust manifold, checking along the head mating surface. The tissue should move due to the exhaust leak. The noise may dissipate once the engine gets to temperature, which you are experiencing.
