E4od problem

1st, I'd like to say howdy everyone, I'm new here.
2nd, I have a 1990 F250 Custom automatic 4x4 with a 351 and an E4OD transmission.
3rd, I do 90% of my own work on my vehicles.
4th, HELP....
Ok... so my old tranny burnt up, took it out and put in another one (out of a running/ shifting truck), truck starts perfect, goes into gear but won't shift..... it is now at a transmission shop and they can't figure it out.... and for some reason when they hook the computer to it, it says can not connect. They have tried two different computers. Still the same outcome. They pulled the tranny and put new pump gears, new converter, new shaft and all that fun stuff in it and still it goes into gear but won't shift. Note: no sensors or anything like that were damaged or replaced. There are no idiot lights on in the dash. All fuses and relays are working as they should. However, I did install a new starter prior to having it towed the the shop....
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Could it be a ground??? Or maybe a broken wire???

May be a simple question but have you verified the shifter is moving at the transmission? If so, can you feel it go into detent when you shift gears? This statement is confusing can you please clarify. " truck starts perfect, goes into gear but won't shift" .. Sandy

The transmission will engage in each gear...however while driving it, it will not shift up nor down on it's own, as it should being an automatic.
hope this answers your question.

Try this method to retrieve your codes. You can just use a paperclip as a jumper.

It was a trans that shifted, but when put in your truck didn't shift, right? And the shop rebuilt the trans after this? You should take it to a shop that knows what they are doing. This one does not. A trans that works in one truck but not when installed in a different truck means the lack of shifting is due to something wrong in the truck, not the transmission. You will need to read the codes to know what's ailing the computer that should be making it shift.

E4OD has 20 pan bolts. The AOD and 4R70W each have 14 bolts.

it will also have that 'beautiful' word METRIC stamped in pan, you know when you can look under or around something to see that bolt/nut and say 9/16 grab it crawl under and soon as you go to break it loose...METRIC! and scrap your knuckles on the concrete because you knew you should have took adjustable wrench with you.

I see a nasty twister went through your neck of the woods.Hope you and yours are safe.
