Trouble with my E4OD tranny!! please help!
If you leave it in drive it revs out in 1st gear but wont shift into second until it revs way up! But if you manually pull the level into second it will shift.

It seems to shift properly if you manually shift it, but if you leave it in drive, it does not, Would anyone know if it may be an electrical problem, or perhaps the torque converter not in properly?
Thanks for any info!
Before I bought the truck it supposedly had a "Pat Barrett Level 10" tranny. Non factory computer and 2800 stall converter. (sounds like you may have the same set-up) I was in the process of building the motor, and decided to get the tranny checked out and do whatever was needed. Well, Dynamic said the rebuild was virtually stock that was in it. They beefed it up with 7 clutches, shift kit, and whatever magic they work. I put it back in and aparently the previous owner, or level 10, had jumped in a wire that we forgot to connect. A month after driving it, we saw the problem, connected the wire and it seemed to shift properly. Aparently we already did damage to the clutches, and Dynamic replaced the clutches.
NOW, here is the problem, we reinstall it, as Dynamic only does bench rebuilds. When we put it in, it doesn't shift properly. As mentioned in my original post, When left in drive, it really doesn't want to shift to second. however when I manually shift to second it seems fine. I don't want to drive it and cause any damage. I don't know if there is an internal problem or it may be electrical.
I need someone to turn to. I fear I will have problems going to a local tranny shop, and Dynamic won't deal with electronics.
Please Help.
First, line pressure to the tranny is controlled by the PCM/ECU, whatever you call it. That wire jumper has a resistor in it to change the line pressure to accomodate the shift kit. You could have a bad connection from the PCM to the solenoid pack in the tranny, and that can cause the problem you are describing.
Second, it could be the solenoid pack inside the tranny. My PCM fried the line pressure circuit inside itself, and cause hard shifting and banging from P to D to R. The local tranny shop says it's usually the solenoid pack, but mine turned out to be the PCM.
Here's what the ford manual states:
Electrical possibilities:
throttle position sensor
electronic pressure control
Hydraulic possibilities:
incorrect line pressure
broken gasket (vavle body)
stuck/damaged pressure solenoid
stuck/damaged engagment valve
pump regualtor valve stuck/damaged
It sounds like an electrical problem to me, but its really hard to tell with these complicated trannies. Hopefully this will help you out some.
They don't! Anyway, the person who installed this system had jumped the wires into the original harness without cutting the wires that the A9P would normally use to control the tranny. So as far as we can tell the tranny was getting 2 signals. Also I had it rebuilt by Dynamic Race Transmissions, and they as well as myself were not aware that with the Baumannator system you need to change the shift solonoids out to a later model year, higher Ohms. Anyway, I finally found someone I feel confident to work on it and that is putting the time and effort to do it right. I will let you know the final outcome of the whole thing, Thanks for your help.

You must be in the CT area?
, I only live about an hour from Dynamic and I actually spoke with them during Fun Ford Weekend about rebuilding my E40D that has 108,000 miles on it now.
I had level10 service my trans and install a HD valvebody in the truck when new and I have never had a problem with it, and I race it often.
I know Dynamic specialize in C4's, but they told me they had experience with the E40D trans and AODs. I was going to look into them alittle more but after reading this experience I don't know.

Actually, We think we almost have it figured out.
When Dynamic rebuilt my E4OD the first time, I think they did a good job, but when we installed we didn't reconnect a wire that had been jumped in by the prior owner and smoked the clutches within a month.
We had them "rebuild" it again and when we installed it, it didn't shift right at all, it would hold 1st gear and rev out.
Well, I have since found out that I have a Tranny controller mabe By Bauman Engineering, which was really HACKED into the truck
slopily and had several problems. However, with the baumannator TCS you mush swap the shift solonoid pack to a later year model(different Ohms), which we didn't know, nor did Dynamic,But we also found that the one in the tranny when the returned it to me the second time was smoked, as well as 2 ***** were in the wrong slots. I think they saw the clutches were smoked and put a new clutch pack in and sent it on it's way without going through it thouroughly. We are just waiting to have the controller tested before we reinstall it, but we have the tranny problem corrected. Now as for Dynamic?. I think they do good work, they did an S/S rebuild on my AODE in my last supercharged Ford F-150 without any problems. I think it would be unfair to say they messed up with my E4OD the first time, however I think they Wam-bammed it on the warranty re-build. Hope this helps your decision.

I attended the Coastal truck nationals last weekend and actually ran my best...I ran 8 back to back 13.9s..and I want to get into the 13.5 range..thats why I am looking at the converter.
take care

I finally got the L up and running strong. My transmission had the Baumannator tranny controller and the stock computer trying to control it, due to the previous owners sloppy wiring. Also, when we rebuilt it I was unaware that we needed to replace the solonoid pack with a later year unit. Then I had to replace the FMU due to fuel pressure problems. I went with the Vortech SFMU and it seems to be working great.
Now my problem is Traction. At about 2/3 throttle it breaks loose, and at about 5# of boost it also breaks loose. I guess that starts my next project. Getting it to hook up.
Thanks for your help.
I may see you all sometime, I already met Paul and his black Lightning. That truck is fast and the motor is one of the nicest I have seen. I still have that Bracket I got from you paul, once I hit 13.2s on all motor. I will be putting the Vortech on. THough It maybe a T trim with the RPMs I want to be in.
