Post FE Starter Fit

76/f250/FE360block/C6/4x4

Questioning the universal fit for a new starter. Im pulling my transmission for rebuild and will be replacing the starter when the tranny goes back in. I want to get a GOOD starter that I can get some miles out of, and when searching i find starters for FE390/427/428 mostly. Are these FE motors/C6 marriage bolt patterns the same as my 76 FE block without any adapters ? My transmission has been replaced at some point and is not a 76' C-6, but an earlier model mated up to my 76' FE block. My truck was born with the 360 turned 390 in like 2001.... Posting in the FE forum also, thanks for any info you have...im prolly overthinking this...

Can you get your existing starter rebuilt? My Grandfather had an old Chevy van once and got a different starter. Went through hell with starters after that, none of the replacements fit right (I was a kid so not really keen on the details other than crawling under it and smacking the starter with a hammer was a standard procedure). After witnessing the trouble he had and hearing some other horror stories about fitment issues with new starters I just went ahead and had mine rebuilt since it's a known quantity. Not the answer to your question exactly, just a thought.

I believe most all FE's used the same starter for the most part. Was the block plate present in the setup prior to tear down? The block plate between the engine and trans located the starter on most FE's. Early ones I think are different but most late 60's-earlier 70's one I think are same.
I ran into that issue on my truck, temporary solution was to use bushings in the starter bolt holes to make the fit very exact. Otherwise there was enough slack in the bolt up that the starter would not be aligned properly. Also, good clean connections help everything last.
My C6 is out and I just rebuilt it. I am hunting for a gear reduction/mini starter myself...one that if there are issues hopefully I can get it out without removing headers/jacking the engine up.

All FE C6's have the same bolt pattern.....429/460 C6's are a different pattern than the FE...and there were some small block C6's that are different as well.

FE starter is the same: 1963/71 all Passenger Cars, 1965/76 F100/350. A/T or M/T makes no difference, FX/MX Cruise-O-Matic or C6 makes no difference.

1958/62 FE starter uses the HUGE Bendix inertia starter drive.

And...the FE flexplate (C5AZ-6375-D) is the same: 1965/67 F100/350 352 MX Cruise-O-Matic; 1968/76 F100/350 360/390 C6 // 1965/71 Ford Passenger Cars 352/390 FX/MX Cruise-O-Matic & C6.
