Questioning the universal fit for a new starter. Im pulling my transmission for rebuild and will be replacing the starter when the tranny goes back in. I want to get a GOOD starter that I can get some miles out of, and when searching i find starters for FE390/427/428 mostly. Are these FE motors/C6 marriage bolt patterns the same as my 76 FE block without any adapters ? My transmission has been replaced at some point and is not a 76' C-6, but an earlier model mated up to my 76' FE block. My truck was born with the 360 turned 390 in like 2001.... Posting in the truck forum also, thanks for any info you have...im prolly overthinking this...
All the same bolt pattern, and the starter itself is nestled up next to the engine block, not the transmission, so any difference in transmission shape would be moot. Really the only thing you need to worry about is header clearance, if you have them.
I have the summit gear reduction starter on mine and it is great. It fits even with long tube headers and I can easily get it in and out without much hassle. I did have to grind a little casting error off of the block where the starter goes to allow it to have the correct clock-rotation, though. I was able to do that with a standard grinder/cut off wheel with the engine in the truck.
Thanks Hetz, I do have long tube headers that sit below the the starter and that has been on my mind for fitment, but those mini high torque starters are suppose to fit with room to spare.
