hi, i am removing the engine from my full size 88 bronco. would it be easier to take the engine out with the transmission attached or to unbolt it. when i put the new engine in, will have to take out the tranny? it sits so damn high off the ground it is hard to get to all the bolts. i have removed engines before but i always removed the tranny at the same time. any help would be appreciated!
I didn't pull the tranny on my 92 when I did an engine replacement. E4OD is huge. I did end up trashing the converter to flywheel nuts trying to disassemble the two components. So, I ended up pulling the torque converter with the engine. This required removing the water pump to gain enough clearance at the front to get the converter off the input shaft splines. A quick run to the local Ford truck dealer for the converter nuts and I was all set. Its quite a lift getting the engine to clear the upper cross member but the cherry picker I rented did the job. While you are dealing with a different tranny, I would think that leaving it in the truck might be easier.
BTW, for the install, I put the converter back in the bell housing then bolted the flywheel to it with the engine in the truck.
I unbolted them from the crossmember and then pulled the engine. Definitely detach the tranny from the engine. The E4OD is a big son of a b*tch. All in all, it took me about 3 hrs from start to finish taking the engine out. Good Luck!
Geez, gotta try and remeber what I did two years ago...I can't remember what I did this morning Anyhow, seems to me that I left the mounts on the motor and pulled them out with it.
U will spend more time on the tranny, then on the engine it's self. Remember, your transfercase is attached to your tranny. Just unbolt the torque converter, then the bell housing bolts, take the motor mounts off the crossmember, u can get those off later. Pull out your radiator, fan, and even the water pump, if u like. U might have to let the air out of the tires, to lower the truck down, so that the motor will clear the top of the hood mount. Also, your tranny coolent lines are attached to the motor, look for this point, or you'll end up buying and making new lines for your tranny. I almost did.
I remember a guy way back in high school who insisted that he was going to "just put a mattress underneath it and drop the engine." I couldn't take any more of the conversation so I just walked away...
But then again, he was driving a Bronco II, so maybe there's nothing underneath the engine to keep it in there
