Wiper question

On my 77 F250 my wipers seem to be loose with no tension on the windshield. Thinking I would solve the issue with new blades, replaced, but didn't help. Is this the way they're suppose to be after 42 yrs or is there a way to adjust the arms so the blades actually remove moisture ?

There are a couple aftermarket companies that make springs that go on the wiper arms and put force back into them. Had a Jeep cj that I had to put them on. With the flat windshield, at highway speeds the wiper lift was horrible. They definitely fixed the problem.

Another option would be to take the wiper arms off, make sure the the pivots are all moving easily and freely, then hunting down some replacement springs.

Thanks for the info. Everything is moving freely but I don’t see any springs. Do you happen to know where they’re suppose to go ?

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post13177096 post #11 for an idea might help you. Springs were at one time inside hollow part of arm near base.

tbear,
Good write up, I copied and pasted it onto a word document as I'm interested in the upgrade for my 77 F-150. The P/N you listed 42631 shows it can be off a 1992-96 Ford F-series or Bronco which leads to the question does 42631 fits our 73-79 Dentside wiper shaft diameter, shaft length and splines? If this was answered within the above posts, I missed that.
A couple question if I may and they are:
- (a) A source for obtaining 1/8" stainless steel pop rivets? I just never noticed anyplace selling them, properly because I never looked for them.
- (b) I would like to modify the wipers on both my 77 F-150 and 95 F-150 so they fold-out, like my wife's newer vehicle, because if they folded out, it would be allot easier when washing the trucks. I have a tendency to bend the passenger cowl with my elbow on the 95 F-150 because the antenna is in the way and bend the antenna on the 77 F-150, when I wash the trucks. I brought this subject last week in the 87-96 forum and no one yet had tried modifying wiper arms to swing out for the 87-96 generation Ford trucks, though those folks are keenly interested.
Your thoughts / experience in this endeavor Sir? Thank you for your time W.my questions.

Yes, they fit the shafts perfectly. '77 windshield is just stood up and slightly shorter than newer ones I found.

I can get the 1/8ss pop rivets at a local hardware, but cheaper if I use ebay or Amazon if I need to restock my supplies.

I would think the process would be the same, but would measure carefully with my intended blades as they are longer than dentside arms anyway …. maybe longer than the '87-'91s … Maybe change in '92 was just the swing out part, they may work without mods on the '87-'92s as well. Very likely they will fit the shafts as perfectly as the shaft splines are same on them from Dents through '96.

TBear 853,
Thanks for your reply. My next junk yard run I'm going to check Ford trucks and other Ford vehicles to see if I can come up W/a modification enabling the wiper arms to swing out, while incorparating your detailed modification instructions above. Like I mentioned earleir, I bent ever so slightly the passenger side cowl on my 95 F-150 while washing the windshield becasue of being forced to use my elblow to lean on the cowl lifting the wiper arm and using my other hand to wash the windshield. Although the 77 F-150's cowl is stronger, but if I'm not careful I'll bend the antena becasue of the akward position required to wash the passenger side windshield. I know it might be too much information. But this matter has been in the back of my mind for awhile now, escpecially since it's so easy to wash my Ranger's windshield when the wiper arms are lifted.

Oh …. when I swing the pass side wiper out, I do use two hands as I guide the blade tip past my antenna.
