I bought a 1981 F350 dually. The factory engine was a 5.8L. I was told this engine is a 460. The engine is not original and with orange paint markings on the valve covers I suspect it is from a wrecking yard. I haven't been successful locating any casting markings on the heads below the valve covers. Did Ford produce engines with grey valve covers? I have only seen blue. There is a engine ID decal on the one valve cover but at the odd angle it looks like it was slapped on, maybe not original. The decal states it is for the 7.0 / 7.5 family. Could this be a 429? Any help would be appreciated.
Safe bet it's a 460 vs the 429. Yep, they came painted grey.
Common for 85 heads to not have the casting externally and maybe other years. The block will have a casting number on it above the starter.
