Hey guys, long time no see. I hope everyone is well.
A few days ago I purchased a 2004 F-250. i have since felt play and clunking sound from the front end. i suspected ball joints, so i took it to the local ford dealer. they quoted me $1,800 for 4 ball joints, parts and labor. that seems ridiculous. its been 10+ years since i have done ball joints, but i don't remember them being that expensive.. what are you guys paying for a 4x4 super duty ball joints job?? thanks

I had the upper and lower replaced on my 03 F350 4x4, Local mechanic, all 4 ball joints plus labor was $600. Tire shop charged me $90 for alignment.
I was getting 1000-1500$ quotes as well. Put the word out and found a true jewel of shop out in the country. 693 out the door for Moog ball joints, all four, and alignment. I have found my go to place an for chassis/ driveline/ suspension work.
I did mine after I found out how much they wanted to do it. I bought a ball joint press tool from harbor freight, it easily paid for itself after I did my F250 and F350.
Its not a hard job at all.
I got a quote for just labor of $500 at my local tire/alignment shop for ball joints on my 03 F350 4x4 about 4 years ago, so $650-$700 now sounds about right. I had a press at home and $500 was a little over my let-someone-else-do-it threshold so I did it myself.
Last year while traveling in NH in a 2001 E450 motorhome I decided it ws time and it was closer to $1100 parts and labor, but that was in a large truck repair shop that had a rack big enough for a 31' coach. So that seemed reasonable and it was a great shop to work with. Went out of their way to show me I didnt need bearings, tie rod ends etc. Honesty pleases me.
B&B Truck Service in Farmington NH. btw. Great shop!
I just did my own. Found a lot of other necessary repairs while I was in there. Replaced all seals, inner and outer, steering linkage, brakes, brake lines, etc. If you use the dealer I bet your price could even go up from there depending on what else they find...
Thanks for all the great info guys, really appreciate it! so... the ridiculous quote bothered me so much, that i crawled underneath it myself (with a good friend who has been a mechanic for 30+ years) and we find that the ball joints were perfectly fine! i would have paid 2k at the dealer and still had the clunking sounds and feel! turns out the tie rods, control arm, and pan hard bar are all bad. so bad that they made contact with the leaf springs (explains the clunk). parts are cheap and labor is buying my mechanic friend pizza and beer. im happy. and screw "the ford store morgan hill" your mechanics SUCK

So did they inspect your truck and tell you it was ball joints? Or did you tell them you suspected ball joints and they told you the cost to replace them? If they inspected it and said bad ball joints then hopefully you were given a written quote. If so i would definitely talk to a manager about this for sure.

Yes, they inspected my truck. and yes i have the written quote. i told them i had a clunk coming from the front end, and asked them to diagnose it.
