Fuel System Replacement - ie Fuel Pump and Injector Replacement

I have a couple questions for those that have gone through the fuel injection pump and injector/fuel system replacement. We have a 2012 6.7 with about 110k miles on the truck, got it with about 70k, and occasionally would get the shutdown condition, only when towing. Checked and replaced the fuel filters religiously, and each time found very fine glitter in the fuel filter housing (under cab) that you could only see if you shined a light directly into the fuel. We also got the following codes repeatedly, P1264 and P228F. These both indicated an issue with the Fuel Pressure Regulator on the drivers side fuel rail, so we replaced that.

We pretty much figured that we would be in for a full fuel system replacement based upon the fine glitter, the issue during towing, and the codes, but we figured we would try the FPR and see, since others had mentioned that could be the issue.

That didn't help, and as a matter of fact, in the last two weeks, its smoking a lot of blue smoke, and doing the shut-down even just while driving, not towing.

I have heard that some people have had good luck replacing the 2011-2014 components, with the 2015-2017 components, that they bolt right on, and after the new injectors have been programmed into the PCM, its all good. I just wondered if anyone here had experience using these parts on the earlier 6.7L? The price is about half of what the older stuff goes for, and I think you pick up a little hp/torque.

Another question. Ford recommends replacing all fuel injectors, injection pump, fuel lines, and fuel rails. I don't see why there would be a need to replace the fuel rails. Could someone explain if this is legitimate, or just something that the dealership promotes to get more money out of their customers?

For reference, here is a link to the kit for the later model trucks:

Thanks

This is the kit you actually need. It has all the parts necessary. This is what Ford calls a Fuel contamination kit.

I recently replaced the hpfp on a '12 6.7. We found metal debris in the fuel rails. Since we were doing the full kit it wasn't worth the risk of saving on fuel rails. Yes, we could have cleaned them but what if we missed a piece of metal? I didn't realize we had to program the injectors to the cylinder they were placed in until I talked to the parts man when we bought the kit. I was glad he mentioned it and we recorded numbers and took it in to be programmed after we had it back together.

Off topic, but when you replace a injector on a 6.7 it has to be programmed to the truck?
