My trusty F250 with 244,000 miles does not want to start after sitting overnight. When I try to start my truck, the starter engages and turns the engine for a couple of seconds and the starter disengaged even though the switch is still in the start position. If I try to start it a second time the starter gear teeth grind against the flywheel teeth so I do not try a second start any more until I rotatate the engine slightly by pulling on the belt. So far the engine has started normally after doing this procedure. The engine starts right up when the engine in hot. The batteries test good.
Has anyone had this problem before or can shine a litt light on what it could be such as ignition switch, starter, starter solenoid or flywheel. Help appreciated.

Reason: Better title
Sounds like a bad starter, or maybe a weak connection between starter & battery.
Instead of turning the engine over by hand to re-set it have you tried just tapping the key to the start position one or maybe a few times? That might re-position the pinion to where it'll engage properly. When it kicks out while still energized the pinion probably isn't fully retracting so when you try to start again it doesn't get thrown into the flywheel hard enough to engage. I've had a couple different starters that would 'kick out' when the engine tried to start. The pinion wasn't being held against the flywheel hard enough so when a cylinder fired and took the load off briefly the pinion would disengage, new starters cured them. You could also try taking it off and cleaning up the pinion engagement bits, might just has some gunk or rust binding it up.
I see what you are talking about the pinion not retracting fully however, what would pulling the belt to rotate the engine have to do with it then engaging?
I read it as the pinion/bendix is not kicking out fully, to engage with the flexplate/flywheel. Working on skis gives me 2 options..
A) check all grounds, power cables
B) sterter going south
Can check the output lug on the starter relay to see how much juice its transgerring
