It has been a while.
On my '01, S-Crew, 4x4, 5.4L the starter is acting up. Every once in a while when cranking over to start it sounds as if you accidentially turn the key when the the engine is running, a very loud grinding metal to metal screech. It has been doing this at an increasing rate, twice today.
Is this a common sign that the starter is beginning to crap out?
The truck has 73k miles on it
Thanks in advance form any feed back, Pete
You might be having some starter solenoid problem like a couple of teeth may rounded off or the spring weakening. The worst side is that it could be some teeth on the flywheel. Just a couple of thoughts.
I just replaced my flywheel for that reason. I ate my gears off with a remote start. I didn't hear it when it was trying to start & it took about 3 inches of teeth off my flywheel. I hope ou just need a selaniod.
Mine does the exact same thing, but not as often, so I have just dealt with it when it happens. Have not changed anything because it doesn't seem to be getting worse. . .
'01 4.6; been doing that infrequently (maybe once a month) since new. Seems to be doing it LESS as the miles accumulate. I also have a remote starter, but I don't know if it has ever done this when remote starting (now I'll be worried!). Has 110,000 miles now.
I think the reason it is so random is because it just depends on where the two wheels stop (flyweel and starter wheel). If which ever one is stripped stops in the stripped portion of the teeth, and you try to start it, grinding occurs. So I think it is just random depending on the position of those gears.
