I am wondering how hard a conversion from a 460 to a 7.3 powerstroke would be? I have a late model 1996 f350 crew cab .... what kind of price range am I looking at ?
Depends on how you plan on getting the diesel parts really. A parts truck is the best option, trying to piece it all together gets expensive and can be difficult to track down the little parts.
Assuming you get the parts truck, then its easy. Price can vary greatly as you really need quite a bit.
To be honest about it. it can be done, BUT it's a very big project, just about everything except the sheet metal is different in some way.. So, in reality you would be ahead of the game to trade for a diesel if you need or have to have one.. After the swap you will probably be chasing gremlins till you get rid of the truck..
I don't mean to pee on your parade, just telling the truth...
If you did want a diesel, a mechanical diesel like 6bt or dt360 is a much easier swap. Can have much more power than a 7.3ps as well. If your crew cab is in good shape, it's probably worth it to you to do a swap. If it's in "replaceable shape", then just find a 7.3 crew.
It wouldn't be worth it honestly.. It will be more than a motor swap. A lot of work to the fuel system and the tachometer would need to be swapped as well. Don;t forget that diesels have 2 batteries so you'll have to add wires and terminals as well as additional battery tray. I would look for one that's got a factory diesel as the cost of a swap plus additional components will be worth the same, if not more than a different truck.
Diesel swaps can be done cheap as long as you're not in a hurry to collect parts, or finish the project. Took me a year to build my fj60 with parts that I collected over the course of 3 or 4 years not knowing what i would build with them. I have about 3k in the drivetrain and associated parts, which includes unavoidable nickel and dime stuff like gaskets and such
