With the way the US is going I am pretty worried about retirement-- I should hit my savings goal in 3 1/2 to 4 years-- unless the stock market takes a real big hit--- I am trying to diversify-- but 95% or everything is electronic-- so if "they" say its gone then its gone-- no matter who "they" is. I have been buying a little gold-- but have very little in my actual hand-- mostly gold and silver certificates-- which are also electronic---- I'm putting away 15-18% every paycheck and I still am a bit worried--- I don't want to end up like my mom who was on welfare most of her life - and could not do anything she wanted when she got older. i also don't want to be like my father in law and work until I feel sick then die 2 months later. I need a big coffee can under my bed with lots of money. Alas no rich uncles either (wel actually I have a rich uncle but haven't seen him for 20+ years and probably never will).
My take when I retired was we weren’t going to have funds to travel the world but if we watched things we could still get by and do some things.
i have grandkids who are still in school but are growing up fast. I wanted to be able to enjoy watching and being with them before they flew the coop. That time goes very fast. Also you never know when health goes to pot. So we are living a good modest retirement. I can’t buy a new bronco but I have a roof over my head and a full belly. That is better than many in the world.
