Coyote swap

Looking at throwing a 2015 coyote into my 68 short box. Anyone done it or have any suggestions? Wondering what auto transmission is best and what harness? Thanks

Lots of good swap info out there, search this forum for ‘f100today’ to see his setup. Also ‘the go fast garage’ is a nicely documented build on YouTube.

Is there a reason you say 2015? Do you already have a motor? I am using the 6r80 that the f150s and mustangs run. I haven't heard much bad about them. You can get a harness to run the coyotes from Ford racing or power by the hour that will run the coyote and 6r80.

There is always the option of getting a donor and using the wiring out of it.

f100today is a 4bt Cummins swap, and The Go Fast Garage is a 6.0L LS swap IIRC. Both are very good sources for information on their corresponding swaps, but may not be real helpful on a Coyote swap. I would still absolutely recommend checking them both out, if not for anything else than the entertainment value. Don't hate on the LS swap too much. The guy actually gives a pretty logical reason for doing it. I can respect that, even If I don't like GM engines in Fords.

Wow, I was on point. Ha

Lets try again. Hackster1 has a really nice coyote build (and a Turbo LS, which I agree is sweet). And looks like I got too caught up on the mustang IRS swap for the go fast garage and forgot the guy put an LS in it.

It takes some combination of money and skills to do a swap like this. Either lots of money and no skills, or mad skills and on a budget can get it done.

I went “all in” with a complete crate package and control kit.
Several projects are done with salvage yard engines which is good if you get a good one like the ones that are on this site.
You can use the original front suspension, manual steering with a manual transmission which will be the most economic way especially if you can do all the labor and fabrication.
I went the CV way, 4R70W with a U.S. Shift kit, Horsepower by the Hour PS and AC mount kit. I did all the fabricating and electrical work that my meager talents could perform.

Kenny, do you have a build thread? Also, was there a specific reason for running the 4r70 vs the 6r80?

Your truck looks good. Definitely my favorite Ford color!

Many thanks man. What pictures I have posted is about the best I could do.
I should have went with the 6R. The 4R is a rebuilt Police car transmission. The 4R80 with the stock converter leaves some to be desired. With the Detroit Locker and slapper bars it will not light up the tires from a stop, however in about 50’ it really starts to scream. A loose converter and a 6R would probably work better. If I ever take it to the track the 60’ times will not be good.
As I said before your metal work skills are reall nice. I can only dream.

What rear end gears do you have?
I had a great teacher for learning fabrication. I tried looking on this site for a "fabrication how to" thread but came up empty handed.

When I get a chance I will try and put one together because fabrication really only requires a welder, grinder, drill, patience and some basic knowledge. This site has a lot of good fabricators. Maybe they could add advice as well.

I have the original 28 spline axles with 3.50 gears.
When I was deployed overseas I asked my parents to send me the order form for the truck. It came with only thr names of the colors and I thought that Lunar Green was a dark metallic green. The truck was delivered to the Ford dealer while I was home on leave, When I saw it I told the salesman that it was the wrong color, that is when I found out what Lunar Green looked like. It turned out to be the better color anyway.

Did you buy the truck new?

August 8, 1968. $2600.00. I still have the original sales slip. I purchased through my Dad’s auto shop for the insurance. It has had a Tonneau cover since it was new. I drove it back to San Diego then about a month later it was loaded aboard the U.S.S. IWO JIMA along with motor cycles, other crew member’s cars and trucks for the move to Long Beach for a ship yard overhaul. I drove it back in September of 69 after my separation.
I guess it It can be considered a family heirloom.
The wife and I dated in it when I bought it in 68.
It originally had a 360 with a standard transmission. It was converted to a wide ratio 4 speed with a SCJ equipped 460 in 74. Since then it has had another 460, a CJ 429 and the current engine. 2 C6s and the current 4R70.
I never thought I was going to keep it this long.

That is awesome! Glad you were able to hang onto it for so long! Really shows how expensive trucks are anymore. Your truck was 34% of the average income in 68. A base f150 is 63% of the average income for 2017.

You could put a book together on the history of your truck! I bet you would sell a few copies on this form.

Just curious. Since you've had the 460 and 429 and now the coyote in that truck, what is your assessment of them? Fun factor, performance etc. I know the coyote should be the most reliable and maintenance free as well as economical, but which do you like in hindsight.

I first added a 4 barrel, dual point distributor, dual exhaust with a stock 360. With the 2.78 first gear 4 speed from a Mustang and 3.50 gearset, never had a problem with Chevy 350 trucks. Either red light street racing or top end.
In 74 I built the 460 and went a little over board, I had the block milled and the 429 SCJ heads milled .030 which had a cranking compression @ 190. I should not have had them milled. I used a 429 CJ hydraulic cam a Motor craft 4300 spread bore carburetor. It was a torque monster and with the same transmission and gears topped out @ 5500 rpm on I-10. I found out later it calculated to 131 with the tires measured. I never tried that again
In 1980 I changed it to a C6 and adder power steering.
The 460 developed a piston noise so I rebuilt stock 460 from a 73 Thunderbird in 1984. The truck was a daily driver and my shop truck for the stern drive shop I had. I put almost 100k miles on that engine.
I replaced the heads with a set of 1970 Police interceptor style, a 2000 stall converter and a C6 with the wide ratio planetary gear set. It was good off the line but was not too good with the converter slippage at slow speed.
I found a fully machined 429 CJ that just needed to be assembled and went with shorty headers and a stock converter. This combination worked good and was the last 385 series in the truck.
The stock 360 was fun but the first 460 was really a lot of fun with 99 octane gas. By todays standard it would be considered a dog with turbo cars, Mustangs, Hemi Challengers,LS Chevys or just about every thing else with fuel injection.
I have not really had a lot of street time with the Coyote as I am trying to get the brakes working right. I cannot locate a F350 brake booster so I will probably end up adding Hydro Boost like I have on my 67 XL. Now that is a really fun car for the road with the 5 speed and 32 valve 4.6.
I hope this gives you some direction that you will be happy with.
