Reverse and no 4x4?

Only thought I have is that maybe your Ex has had the oem vacuum hubs replaced with aftermarket ones. Had a Scout with Warn "auto" hubs that would engage (via roller clutch internally) when 4 wheel was engaged. Only worked going forward, and the clutch would unlock in reverse. They had a manual position which locked the hub so it worked both ways, but had to be unlocked when not using 4WD. Don't know if they are still made and available. Was early days stuff, so you could engage 4WD if needed quickly without leaving vehicle to lock hubs in.

No, if you have a correctly working ESOF system it works in any direction, any speed. Ran mine for years during the winter in the auto setting never lost 4x4 in reverse.
Sounds like a bad hub to me?
